Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body, amounting to 1.6 per cent of our body mass. Of the average 1,200 gm. of calcium in our body, more than 99 percent are found in our bones and teeth. The balance are present in muscles, nerves and floating in the blood stream, where it plays very important role in many enzyme and production of nerve signals and production of energy to the muscles.

Nutritional calcium are relatively well absorbed, on an average 30 per cent of ingested calcium can reach our blood stream. However, absorption into the blood stream depends on many factors. High alcohol, lack of hydrochloric acid in the gastro-intestinal system, or high acid forming food (mainly protein) will decrease absorption of calcium. Presence of lead also competes with calcium absorption.

In post-menopausal women, the low level of estrogen also make calcium less retainable - therefore it is important for women in their pre- & post-menopausal period to supplement their diets with a good calcium formulation.

Calcium once in our body, will move constantly from blood to bone. It is released into the blood when it is needed to stimulate muscles or nerves. Once this reaction is over, the thyroid gland recalls calcium to the bones by secreting the hormone calcitonin.

Symptoms of calcium deficiency include muscle cramps, tremors, or spasms, insomnia, nervousness, joint pain, osteoarthritis, tooth decay and high blood pressure. Severe deficiency results in osteoporosis or porous bones. However, there is obvious connection with hormone imbalance (as in menopausal) and protein excess, both of which affect calcium utilization in the body.

Our average diet provides marginally lesser than RDA for calcium. Hence taking supplement helps to bring this requirement up. Calcium comes in many forms, the best absorbed of which are from natural source, e.g. from scallop shell. Generally there is little danger of toxicity in taking higher dosage of calcium (1,500 mg) since the body excretes excess amounts.
