In the early time, the Japanese drinks green tea from the powder form (Matcha). In 1738 Nagatani Soen of Ujitawara created Sencha, and this is now the most popular tea in Japan. Matcha is now used mainly in Sado (Tea Ceremonies) and flavoring as food additives in candies, cakes and ice cream. Multiple clinical tests have shown that Green Tea is rich in anti-oxidants which can destroy free radicals and have very positive effects on our body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can damage our body at the cell level to cause death threatening diseases such as cancer, heart problems, and many other degenerative diseases. The chart below gives a good account of the active components in Green Tea and their properties. |

| The
Straits Times, Friday, December 18. 1998 reported that Green Tea might
help to fight cancer. Sighting the findings of Professor Dorothy Morre
of Purdue University who said Our research shows that green tea leaves
are rich in this anti-cancer compound (epigallocatechin gallate), with
concentrations high enough to induce anti-cancer effects in the body. On Monday, October 15, 2001 The Straits Time had another article which reads with the headline ONE PLANT'S THOUSAND AND ONE US Research has shown that green tea extracts of polyphenols or catechins, are effective in helping to reduce oxidisation, smells and the formation of bacteria". The Chunichi-shinbun, Nagoya, Japan (pp 1 - 239) 1990 published the observation of I. Oguni and Y. Hara, "Green tea has many medicinal activities for preventing disease such as cancer, cardio-vascular diseases and diabetes". It was reported in the Chem. Pharm. Bulletin 31, 1625 (1983) that Professor T. Okuda had demonstrated that catechin in green tea is a far stronger antioxidant than Vitamin E (about 20 times stronger) and can suppress aging. It has the ability to slow aging by preventing the production and accumulation of active oxygen and lipid peroxide, Lipofusion called the "aging pigment". In a separate clinical report by Prof. Shu-Jun Cheng of the Cancer Institute, Chinese Academy of Medical Science (Beijing), it was found that green tea has the ability to inhibit the development of cancer cells in the esophagus and forestomach of 50% of the mice under study. In the Kamakura era (1191 - 1333), the monk by the name of Eisai wrote a book under the title "Maintaining Health by Drinking Tea". He stressed that "Tea is a miraculous medicine for the maintenance of health. Tea has an extraordinary power to prolong life. Anywhere a person cultivates tea, long life will follow. In ancient and modern times, tea is the elixir that creates the mountain dwelling immortal." |
